Platelet Rich Plasma

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy?

PRP is a combination of two elements: plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, and platelets are a type of vesicle that promote healing throughout the body by assisting with clotting and tissue regeneration. Platelets are produced in your bone marrow and travel throughout the body within the blood vessels. The cells within the platelets initiate clotting to a wound site and deliver healing factors to injured tissue structures. This in turn, attracts stems cell to assist with tissue rebuilding and stimulate cell reproduction.

What is a PRP injection?

PRP therapy begins with taking a blood sample from the patient. The sample is then placed into a machine, called a centrifuge, which rapidly spins the blood sample. The spinning of the blood sample causes the components of blood to be separated from the platelets and concentrating them with the plasma. After the spinning of the blood sample has completed, that “solution” is injected into the patients’ specific area of injury, such as a damaged tendon or injured knee/elbow etc. Since the PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood supply, it effectively eliminates the risk of infection, intolerance or rejection, which is sometimes the case with steroid injections and other treatments used for joint pain and other conditions The injection promotes the body’s natural healing process by increasing growth factors at the targeted area of the injury.

What conditions can PRP therapy treat?
