Erectile Dysfunction

What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) refers to the inability to achieve or sustain an erection that is firm enough for sexual satisfaction. ED can take on various forms, such as the inability to sustain an erection, and/or an erection that lacks the necessary firmness for sex.

ED is the most common sex-related condition among men. It is estimated that about 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 are affected by some form of ED.  It is important to note that the number of men experiencing symptoms of ED may be higher, due to the sensitive nature of this issue. Many men may be hesitant to discuss it with their doctors because of feelings of shame or embarrassment.

If you are experiencing occasional difficulty with erections, it normally isn’t a cause for concern. However, ongoing issues with ED can lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, or fear of sexual intercourse of intimacy. If there is a continuing issue, then you may need to consult a doctor. ED can be diagnosed by a doctor who will review your medical and sexual history, perform a physical exam and conduct lab tests to determine the underlying cause(s) contributing to ED.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

There are many possible causes of ED including:

  • Certain diseases or conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, low testosterone, high cholesterol
  • Injury to the penis area
  • Certain medications: ED is a common side effect of many prescription drugs
  • Substances that have addition potential such as marijuana, nicotine, alcohol
  • Psychological conditions

The primary cause of ED is typically conditions that affect your body’s ability to deliver blood flow to your penis. When blood flow to the penis is limited, it can result in a variety of symptoms of erectile dysfunction such as inability to get or maintain an erection or requiring a lot of stimulation to maintain an erection. Men over the age of 40 have the greatest risk of getting ED. In addition, if you smoke, have diabetes, or are not physically active it may contribute to symptoms of ED.

How Do You Treat Erectile Dysfunction?

The first step to treating ED is to identify the underlying cause(s).
